Formed in the UK in 2007, Cuadrilla is a privately owned British exploration and production company focussed on discovering and recovering natural resources, primarily natural gas, from shale rock. The company is headquartered in Bamber Bridge, Lancashire.

Cuadrilla aims to be a model company for exploring and developing shale gas in the UK. We are acutely aware of the responsibilities this brings, particularly with regard to safety, environmental protection and working with local communities. Shale gas exploration and development can be carried out safely, securely and in an environmentally responsible way so that as a country we have less need to use coal to generate electricity and import less gas from overseas.

At present in the UK we import approximately half of our gas needs from overseas and by 2030 this is forecast to increase to some 80%. Renewables, whilst an important and growing share of the electricity market, cannot meet all of the UK’s short term energy needs and gas must play a role over the medium term particularly in heating UK homes and offices and fuelling UK industry.

Domestically produced natural gas from shale would increase the UK’s energy self-sufficiency, reduce the CO2 emissions associated with importing Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) and secure investment and jobs for local communities across the country. Assessing the commercial viability of shale gas production in the UK is a national imperative and at Cuadrilla we are proud to be at the forefront of that effort.

The company currently has onshore exploration licences in the North and South of the UK with covering approximately 600,000 acres.
