Leah Thompson, Marketing Officer at Utiligroup – winner of the Business of the Year category at the BIBAs 2018
What was your motivation to enter the BIBAs 2018? Had you entered the BIBAs before? If so, what made you want to enter again?
We had entered before but had been unsuccessful. We wanted to enter again as the BIBA’s are such prestigious awards within the region and our business is continually growing and improving so we were hopeful that this year we would make a memorable and impressive impact on the judges.
How did you find the BIBAs 2018 application process? How did the application form make think about your business?
The application form required me to look deep into the foundations of our business, discuss the history and how we have come to be the successful business we are today. The questions varied across different areas of the business, allowing me to showcase our performance of our workforce, CSR involvement and financial growth.
What were your impressions of the first round of BIBAs 2018 judging, the face-to-face interviews? How did you involve the rest of your business in this process? Did the questions you were asked by the judges make you think differently about your business?
2 members of our Exec team attended the face-to-face interviews. They explained that the judges asked questions with a slightly different angle to usual awards interviews, which required them to think but also allowed them to showcase aspects of the business that usually go unnoticed.
What was your experience of ‘The BIBAs On Tour’ second round of judging? What did this give you the ability to show the judges that you couldn’t show in your application or interview? How did your workforce get involved in this process?
This was a great aspect of the judging process as it allowed us to really show off our workforce, our building and our culture. We wanted as many different people from different departments to be able to chat with the judges to provide a good overall balance of the business. One thing that really stands out from us as a company is the workforce and the culture. Despite being a large company we really value our people and aim to provide an enjoyable and relaxed atmosphere and we hope the judges were able to get a glimpse into this.
How has the BIBAs 2018 judging process changed the way you look at your business? Is there anything your business is doing differently as a result of something you learnt from the judging process?
Winning the Business of the Year award was an amazing achievement and something the company is very proud of. The fact that so many of our employees were involved across the judging process hopefully allowed everyone to feel proud that they played a part in our win.
When you heard your name announced at the BIBAs 2018 awards night, how did you feel?
Pleasantly surprised and very happy that we had won the most acclaimed award of the night. We had a table of 10 people from different areas of the business, so it was a great feeling to be able to celebrate with our colleagues.
How will you use your success at the BIBAs 2018 to promote your business, motivate your workforce, grow your business?
Since we have won we have sent out numerous communications to our employees to highlight our win and thank them for their involvement. We have also used the winner’s logo across different areas and it is now pride of place on our website.
