Every week we will bring you the thoughts of a former winner of one of our awards about why they applied, what the application process did for them and what being a BIBAs winner means to them. Here we hear from Damian and Helen Broughton, of Danbro, the winner of the Business of the Year prize at the BIBAs 2015……
“It’s great to have that recognition of what you do but, I’ll be honest, the first time when we won two awards – Business of the Year and Employer of the Year (2011) – was a big shock,” Damian said. “You never expect to win awards like that because you’re going up against some fantastic companies and Lancashire has a lot of great companies and entrepreneurs.
“It’s a massively tough competition to win – as they say, it’s the one they all want to win but there is a great sense of achievement in just getting through to be a finalist. “That’s because of the rigorous process; that’s a great process to have with the application procedure, followed by the interview and then the judges’ visit. “That’s a great thing to have when the judges come in and speak to your staff to get a feel for your company.”
Helen added: “We’d definitely tell companies to go for it because it gets you thinking about stuff you don’t sometimes think about. “You look at some of the questions on the application and form and wonder how you’re going to answer it; sometimes you think you’re a bit ordinary but it’s things like that which help you to improve year on year.”
