It was almost 12 months ago when Blackpool Zoo director Darren Webster stepped in to the spotlight at the resort’s Tower Ballroom to accept a different type of prize.

The zoo had already been named among the best in the UK and Europe by its visitors and collected prizes for being a leading tourist attraction, but winning the Leisure Business of the Year prize at the Be Inspired Business Awards, the BIBAs, was quite different.

Speaking after the awards, a spokesman for the zoo said: “Recognition within the Lancashire business community reinforces the success the Zoo has enjoyed under international owners, Parques Reunidos, and acknowledges the results of their continued investment.

“The Zoo has increased visitor numbers, revenue and profits year on year and is now considered a leading player within the tourism industry in the county.”
