Judges Tips

We’ve assembled an impressive array of volunteer judges again this year, here’s some of the advice they’ve been sharing with us about what they’ll be looking for.

Every year, a key theme for judges across all categories is innovation. They want to see how Lancashire’s businesses are inventing new products and services, new business models, and new solutions to existing problems.

It’s certainly on the radar for Jennifer Bell, partner at Baines Wilson LLP. She told us: “As a judge I am always excited to see the applications submitted by the many great businesses we have in and around the Lancashire area. I always get blown away by the shear calibre of the applications we review, however as a judge I’m eager to see how businesses are doing things differently, what new innovations they have and what exciting opportunities they are creating.”

Sharing all the facts is also important, but so is bringing them to life with stories about the challenges you faced and overcame, or the opportunities you spotted and took.

Lynsey Brown, general manager at the Hampton by Hilton hotel in Blackpool is judging the Leisure and Tourism category, and told us: “I’m really looking forward to hearing how businesses have been developing and generating new opportunities for themselves. I’d encourage entrants to really focus on the criteria, being mindful of the word limit of the application form. Facts are important but so are the stories about your business that give a real insight into what you do and how you do it. You’re a successful business – let’s hear about it!”
